The Property Accounting Department is responsible for maintaining the accounting records on all real and tangible personal property (land, buildings, and equipment) acquired or disposed of by the County and Constitutional Officers, with the exception of the Orange County Sheriff. In addition, this department performs an independent inventory of all tangible personal property (equipment) annually, which helps to ensure that public assets are properly accounted for.

The Property Accounting Department also maintains a surplus property warehouse that is used temporarily to store equipment. Other departments may visit the warehouse and request transfer of equipment to their department, thereby allowing them to obtain a needed piece of equipment at no additional cost to taxpayers. This department also conducts public auctions of surplus equipment. These auctions allow the County an opportunity to recover part of its expenditures for equipment and vehicles, and provide the citizens with a fair and open opportunity to purchase these items.
